Trickster is a myth that spans the globe. In Africa, typically a spider. In Greek myth it was Hermes. In far northern Europe, Loki. In Japan, Kitsune fox gods. Sang Kancil, the mouse/deer trickster of Malaysia/Indonesia. High John the Conqueror was a trickster for the slaves of early America. In North America the coyote was typically the trickster; in the SW desert, Kokopelli.
Myth is a story that has a basis in some fundamental truth of any given society. Trickster is that energy which confronts arrogance: mocking, ridiculing, making light of. Get too full of oneself and the universe is sure to take you down a proverbial peg or three. Continue to hold on to one’s assumptions of one’s greatness or inevitability, trickster will push until one is neither great nor inevitable, for certain. Trickster is focused chaos to aloof order, the monkeywrench in the gears of civilization, a cartoon frog and bad orange man to Mz Rodham and the unholy empire.
If anyone is unfamiliar with 4Chan, Pepe, Kek the god of chaos and the 2016 election, John Michael Greer wrote a fascinating primer in four parts.
After the 2016 election, had democrats taken a step back, asked themselves what it was that caused people to vote for Trump (the hollowing out of economic opportunity), why they did not choose Mz Rodham, what they might do to change to get more people to vote for them, they would have been made stronger. But that is not what happened. Instead they spent the next four years calling him illegitimate, calling his voters names, trafficking in endless falsehoods about his relationship with Putin, misrepresenting everything Trump said and tried to do, growing ever more unethical and immoral with each passing year, anything goes and nothing matters in the effort to get Trump/save democracy, to the point of letting his fans storm the capital on Jan 06, and now of course, 91 indictments in 4 different localities and an infamous mug shot.
It is epic trickster energy that his name is Trump. Trickster trumps every attempt at godhead - including Trump if he wins and takes his retribution too far.
So, if you are feeling at all like the powers aligned against us are insurmountable, take heart, Trickster is on our side (for now).
Mockery, satire, laughter and mirth, meme them unto oblivion.
I’ve been working through the podcast at The Emerald, which I profiled this summer. This one on the Trickster is well worth listening to. The trickster does not take sides, the trickster shows up every time, for anyone or movement that gets too full of themselves. A healthy culture like many a pre-colonial native American culture, performed a regular ritual to acknowledge and honor the trickster, so as to address unresolved issues and conflict that would otherwise metastasize and damage the community. If trickster is inevitable, it pays to acknowledge trickster, make a place for him, especially if it is uncomfortable to an (especially collective) inflated ego.
It is a well worn trope on this Substack, that in the decline of any given civilization, elite become insular, unable to see anything but their own narrative of their profound greatness, which narrative deviates further and further from the needs of the people, that it becomes like a negative feedback loop of doom. The level of disconnect has gone stratospheric, so much so that it has become pathological, even eugenic and genocidal in practice. What sort of power could make it so, that everyone in America is not talking about a seeming exponential increase in excess death for people 0-24? This is surely the saddest graph I have ever seen, and it is beyond unbelievable that it has not ground the leviathan to a halt. Cognitive dissonance indeed, well beyond epic. We have never needed trickster more, in my lifetime. Kokopelli is also a fertility god. What kind of ritual song and dance is required to get this bloody empire to wake the fuck up?
Trickster shows us what we do not want to see, what we refuse to acknowledge. Trump is like a trickster foil to reveal the pathology of the empire. Except trickster Trump is all-in on his “perfect” jabs, just not on mandates. Dr Drew is aware of the utterly catastrophic excess mortality numbers; If Dr Drew is alarmed by it, but the rest of officialdom is silent, officialdom is doomed, because they know and they are hiding, in denial or actively obfuscating. The above graph is from May but the data is not getting better. If this continues it WILL grind the leviathan to a halt. It must.
