It is worse than reading our own media, or rather disturbing in a different way. It is convenient to have a national language that no one else in the world speaks. You can hide so much from outside scrutiny, most importantly you can hide the true nature of your country, and cultivate whatever image you want the world to have of you. A great deal of what is published in the Israeli media is not translated into English, and this is, of course, deliberate. Gideon Levy’s articles are translated because Ha’aretz is useful for Israel’s image. ( Ha’aretz has very small Israeli readership.
