The reception to claims about an Indigenous “way of knowing” tends to be determined by our political tribe. On the left, the very idea of a distinct, non-Western way of knowing is accepted as an obvious truth, if not an unimpeachable piety. Indigenous peoples, it is argued, live in harmony with nature and are thus uniquely attuned to the “interconnections between all things.” On the right, such a claim is often met with derision, and is dismissed as the latest iteration of faddish, “noble savage” mysticism. I think both these positions are wrong and misleading, and they overlook a much more interesting story. An Indigenous “way of knowing” is a real phenomenon, but it falls short of exaggerated claims about an epistemic access to the world that is just as rigorous as the natural sciences.   Psychos in Charge of Sinking USS America 2.0 Only the blackest of hearts need apply Donald Jeffries The old line about “truth forever on the scaffold, wrong forever on the throne” comes to mind regularly now, as I observe the dying throes of the American Republic. It’s probably fitting that we’ve closed most of the mental institutions, since the entire country has largely devolved into the largest insane asylum the world has ever seen. Now, I understand that, being mere peasants and all, we don’t have the pleasure of seeing who our  real  rulers are. So I can only assess the leaders we  can  see, and they are the most pathetic lot imaginable. Not only is America 2.0 the antithesis of a meritocracy, we have accomplished the very difficult feat of elevating the wrong people into the wrong jobs in all the wrong places. There is no bright spot in this decaying civilization, not even a single small district somewhere, with decent and honorable people in charge. Not...
