Clearing up misinformation about the spike protein and COVID vaccines Joomi Kim What is the spike protein? The spike protein is a type of protein on the surface of the SARS-CoV-2 virus that helps the virus infect cells. The COVID vaccines available in the U.S. work by getting the body to produce this protein (with some modifications) so that the body will generate neutralizing antibodies to it.  There is evidence that the spike protein by itself, even without the rest of the virus present, can cause harm to the body.  In Part I of this article I’ll summarize some of the evidence for this. This is not really controversial at this point. However, what is controversial is that some people have asked: if spike is dangerous, might we be endangering people by giving them vaccines that make the body produce spike?
