COVID Politics Takes a Dark Turn, Biden Administration Takes Control of Monoclonal Antibody Drugs in Order to Block Treatments in Red States and Ration Equitable Treatment   Sundance   When Joe Biden’s Health and Human Services made the announcement earlier this month ( LINK ) that they were taking full control over Monoclonal Antibody drugs (mAb) in order to begin rationing the highly effective treatment for COVID-19 infection, several people sounded alarm bells as there was the potential for rationing of COVID treatment based on political ideology.   Representative Chip Roy of Texas was one of the first to raise concerns ( link ). The change in HHS approach followed republican governor Ron DeSantis of Florida promoting the use of mAb and opening up dozens of treatment centers throughout his state.   Other governors quickly took notice of the effective action plan of DeSantis in Florida and started to follow that path. As soon as HHS noticed the red state ...

COLLEGE STUDENTS HAVE SHOWN DEEP DEFICITS OF KNOWLEDGE AND CRITICAL THINKING REGARDING CORONAVIRUS

COLLEGE STUDENTS HAVE SHOWN DEEP DEFICITS OF KNOWLEDGE AND CRITICAL THINKING REGARDING CORONAVIRUS Mark Oshinskie College students, what has been wrong with you for the past 18 months? Historically, students have protested about a wide range of issues: segregation, wars, environmental damage, university investment practices, et al. Basic conditions facilitated this activism: students were concentrated on campuses, they had spare time that lunch-pail workers lacked, and they were inquisitive and idealistic. Protesting was also a good way to meet women. Students often conducted large rallies and teach-ins, organized strikes and boycotts and broke into university presidents’ offices. Once in, these erstwhile “insurrectionists” sometimes stayed for days. While I was in college, students protested from the first week, about a faculty tenure decision, until graduation day, because the gowns weren’t made by union labor. The years between encompassed an overlapping series of causes. Throughout...

The Negative-Sum Economy

The Negative-Sum Economy John Michael Greer There are tides and seasons in the comments I field for posts here on my blog, certain questions that get asked at regular intervals, certain saliva-flecked tirades I can count on getting whenever  certain things appear in my writings or happen in the world.  One of the more frequent of the questions is how to preserve wealth in the face of a difficult future.  This question pops up reliably when an economic crisis is on its way, as it happens, and I’ve started fielding it again in recent weeks; my readers may want to brace themselves. Like so many of the common questions here, it’s an important question, and it has no simple answer. The combination of those features isn’t accidental. It’s an important question because it can’t be answered in any meaningful way without grappling with what wealth actually is, and it’s because wealth is not what most people think it is that the question has no simple answer. We can start our explo...
