The split so monstrous that any perceived commiseration between the two sides is just cheap window dressing. We have become so divided that politics no longer matters. Partisanship has taken the place of genuine disagreement, drawing the battle lines along ideological bounds. The most striking evocations of this are the now daily examples of the New Left’s flouting of issues and ideas that should unequivocally be nonpartisan, universal concerns—in any normal society, that is. Note I use the term Left as a form of mutually intelligible shorthand.
